5pound theatre is excited to present an original work Kiss Them All Soundly, a creative re-imagining of three famous nursery rhymes - Simple Simon, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Georgie Porgie.
Kiss Them All Soundly is written and directed by 5pound theatre’s co-Artistic Director Jason Cavanagh and stars co-Artistic Director Susannah Frith and newcomers Adam Willson, Peter Rowley and Brooke Smith-Harris.
Nursery Rhymes where originally fictionalized accounts of true events. Kiss Them All Soundly reverses this process by turning these childish rhymes into dark, humorous, moving tales of the terrible truth verses a sweet little lie.
‘One of the nursery rhymes my mum used to read to me when I was young was about the old woman who lived in a shoe who had so many children she didn’t know what to do. The old woman decided that one way to get her kids off to bed was to whip them all soundly. My mum decided this was too cruel for my innocent ears and changed the words to… Kissed them all soundly.’ – Jason Cavanagh
It is this kind of manipulation that lies at the heart of Kiss Them All Soundly, a play that asks the question- would you face cold hard fact, or rather frolic in fiction.
What happened to Mary’s little lamb? Why is Simon simple?
